Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a
scan that provides a 2D or 3D view of a part of the body. It allows the soft
tissues to be observed, in many cases with greater contrasts than in a CT scan
(computed tomography).
A magnet* produces a magnetic
field that allows accurate images to be created of the zone observed.
*Check with your physician about any possible contra-indications such as
mobilizing metals, vascular clips, pacemakers, defibrillators, drug-infusion
pumps or neurostimulators.
Who interprets the test?
The tests are interpreted by a
radiologist, who is a medical doctor with a specialty in radiology. The written
report will be forwarded to your attending physician, generally within 48 hours
of the test.
Preparation for the test
A technologist will ask you a few
questions before the test. You will also be asked to remove your clothing,
accessories, watch and jewellery.
You can bring along your favorite CD and listen to music during the test.
